Superkids

Welcome back to The Superkids! This year, the same class enters Second Grade with their new teacher, Ms. Blossom. We will be introduced to some new characters, as well as many new and challenging reading skills.  Below is a description of the different components of the program that we will be using this year.

1. Decodable Reader and Word Work Book- These materials will be used during instruction of phonics, spelling and grammar.

2. Super Magazine- This magazine is designed just for kids in order to include

non-fiction articles in a realistic magazine format. There is one issue of Super Magazine for each unit of study. We will learn about a variety of subjects while also learning about magazine format. These concepts include the table of contents, articles, themes, and issues. There is new vocabulary to learn with each issue of Super Magazine.

3. Book Club- The Book Club introduces students with solid reading skills to literature written by well-known authors. We will cover many different genres as we read each chapter book. There is also separate, new vocabulary with each book as well as many opportunities to write. Each books comes with a Book Talk Journal which allows students to respond to the literature everyday. Each unit in Superkids includes two chapter books and each are designed to be read in one week. We will be reading these books in large groups, small groups, and  independently for stronger readers.

4. Write It Right- This is the writing component of Superkids. It covers many different types of writing including informative, expressive, opinion pieces, narratives and opportunities for researching, public speaking and listening. I also use a tool called Writer's Workshop. During this time, my students have an opportunity to create their own books designed loosely around other books that we've read. The books we will read are called "mentor texts" and they are helpful in allowing children to experiment with style and creativity without pressure! We really enjoy writing our own books!

5. Fluency First- Fluency First is not related to Superkids but offers a great opportunity to practice reading fluency through the use of fiction and nonfiction short stories. We practice fluency each week for homework. Completing the fluency will improve your child's porosity  and accuracy in order to improve reading levels.
