 Welcome to Miss Marsh's 2nd grade class!


Second Grade Curriculum:

 

 Reading

Students will continue with the Super Kids program and be exposed to many different reading genres throughout the school year. Students will develop important reading skills through many novel studies as well as nonfiction. Skills such as story elements, main idea, details, sequencing, cause/effect, inferencing decoding, fact/opinion, summarizing, and vocabulary will be emphasized during the year. We cannot express how important it is that your child reads at least 20 minutes each day for enjoyment.

Written Communication

Students will learn writing skills with the Super Kids program and will cover parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs), proper capitalization, and proper punctuation. Students will transfer these skills into writing complete paragraphs and detailed stories. Students will write to inform, persuade, and personal expression. Students will also be guided through the process of writing a research report.

Oral Communication

Students will learn to express themselves orally through class participation, individual presentations, and group presentations. Students will learn how to use eye contact, inflection, gestures, and enunciation.

                                                                      Math
Students will learn and study methematical skills such as Counting and the Number System and Addition and Subtraction (both listed under Number and Operations-Whole Numbers), Data Analysis, Fractions, Measurement, Patterns, Functions, and Change, and Geometry.

                   Social Studies

The focus for social studies is learning about good citizenship, our community, Native American culture, famous Americans, economics, Egypt, and China

 

Science

Students will learn: weather an air, states of matter,  living systems (animals), life processes (plants), and an introduction tothe scientific method.

 

Technology

Students will use handwriting and typing skills.  The students will also learn: word processing, spreadsheets, graphs, time lines, and databases through various class projects.
