Hello ORES Families!

My name is Bethany Lyle and I will be the new school counselor at Otter River this year.  I’m very excited to serve in Bedford County, as I have been a long-time resident and am a parent of four students within the district.  I recently graduated with a Masters of Education in School Counseling and am eager to start serving students’ emotional, career development, and academic needs through a developmental and prevention-based counseling program.

One of my core beliefs is that all children are capable of positive and transformative growth.  As a school counselor, I am passionate about creating an emotionally-safe, solution-focused, and empowering atmosphere for all students so that they may grow to be empathetic, resilient, and responsible problem-solvers in their homes, school, and community.  Throughout the school year, students will be exposed to a social emotional (SEL) curriculum focused on empowering topics such as embracing a growth mindset, learning self-awareness and self-management, developing strong character, learning positive thinking skills and healthy calming strategies, respecting others and being kind, utilizing positive conflict resolution skills, making responsible choices, and employing effective decision-making skills, to name a few.  The social emotional learning curriculum will be aligned with the Virginia Standards for School Counseling, ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors, and social emotional competencies.

In addition to overseeing the SEL curriculum, the ORES counseling program will offer support services to students including individual counseling, group counseling, parent/teacher consultation, and referral services.  If your student is referred for individual or group counseling services, parent permission will first be secured before services are provided to the student. I believe we can best meet student needs and encourage holistic and positive transformation through healthy collaborative efforts with parents, teachers, administrators, and school and community resources.  As partners in this endeavor, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with your questions or concerns.  I can be reached by email at or by phone at 540-586-9210.

I’m so excited to know the ORES family better and look forward to serving this wonderful school community.  Despite the unique challenges we’re facing during this time, I believe we’re going to have a great school year!
